Mulege to Loreto Expedition

Let adventure take you on the route less traveled! This journey along the coast north of Loreto features a sea turtle sanctuary (in development), amazing snorkeling, unique rock formations, small fishing villages, and Isla Coronados.

Remoteness protects this area. Because its not in the Loreto Marine Park, spearfishing and shellfish gathering are permitted here. Guides often add fresh seafood to the menu.

Punta Pulpito, one of the crux moves of the trip, is notorious for its drama, both in sea state and in geology. Because most of the beaches are exposed to the north, surf landings are common here, and the sea can be rough.

Isla Coronados is the final treat along this route. It’s a 160,000-year-old volcano cone with white sand beaches off its SW side. Sea lions haul out on the rocks on the other side and are accustomed to visits. They like to swoop up below your kayak and look up with big, round eyes. Feeling ambitious? Tackle the challenging hike up the loose terrain of the volcano for a panoramic reward.

Sample Itinerary – Mulege to Loreto Expedition
SELF-SUPPORTED CAMPING TRIP IN SEA KAYAKS

Subject to weather, Port closures, and other fun factors intrinsic to “Adventure” tourism.

Day 0. Meet in Loreto for a pre-trip briefing and to fit your equipment.

Day 1. Drive almost 2 hours north to a beach in Bahia Conception, and start the trip with a 4nm crossing to the Concepcion peninsula. Travel along its broad point with a rewarding view back to the Baja peninsula. The journey has begun!

Days 2-3 Paddle in solitude along the rocky coast. Camp on beaches that few people have ever seen, let alone slept on. Enjoy nights of stars and delicious darkness.

Day 4. Round the infamous Punta Pulpito, perhaps in the calm, perhaps in the miles-wide tide race that sometimes forms there. There are no tidal atlases for here, so observation and the moon will give us the only clues we have.

Days 5-6. San Basilio is the most beautiful series of coves in all of Baja! Spend two nights (this layover is also our flex-day in case of wind). Snorkel the sea stacks, refine your kayak roll and other skills in the delightful water. This is an area frequented by sea turtles. We’ve seen several on our snorkel outings.

Day 7. Paddle south to San Bruno, a broad estuary with several camping options, and explore the special environment where land and sea mix each other up. 11nm.

Day 8. Paddle down a mountainous coast and cross to Isla Coronados, island of geological conundrums. The volcano is young by geological standards, just 160,000 years since the last eruption. But the raised marine deposits around its western flank are relatively old. 11nm.

Day 9. Circumnavigate Isla Coronados,, about 8nm, visiting the curious sea lions on your way, and seeing if you can find the secret slot on the north end if the seas are glassy. 8nm.

Day 10. Head back to Loreto. Lunch on the beach and say goodbye to the little band of sea gypsies you’ve grown to like so much. 7nm.

Day after. Wake up late because you can! Treat yourself to a well-deserved massage in Loreto, or some colorful recuerdos to take home to friends. Fly back to somewhere, carrying with you great memories of life without walls.

Weather

Your safety is our top priority, and we comply with the local Port Captain who dictates when we can move about on the water.

Loreto offers a delightful escape from cold or wet northern winters. The peak kayak-camping season falls between October and early May. Temperatures can vary widely between day and night in the desert, and Loreto is no exception. Average highs are 70-80s (mid to high 20sC) and lows in the 50s (teens C).

October and late April are quite warm and settled. December through February have the greatest potential for Baja’s famous Norte winds which can last a few days. November and March are transitional. Summers are hot and humid, which makes them grand for in-water activities but a bit toasty for beach camping.
