Paddling in the surf is tremendous for developing dynamic water skills! The waves are an exacting coach, giving immediate and clear feedback. Our experienced and certified human coaches will support your learning curve with surf safety basics, encouragement, and insightful tips.

For this course we go down the coast to a north-facing sandy beach. It’s usually in the afternoon and best with a low tide.

Course is dependent on appropriate weather.

Skill Level

Intermediate; frequent paddler. Challenging activity.

Paddling in the waves takes energy! A good level of fitness, comparable to a half-day hike with hills, is strongly recommended. A comfortable wet exit where you maintain a grip on your kayak as you exit is essential. Bracing skills are good to have, though you can learn them here – you’ll know immediately if you’ve got it right or not! Beyond that, strong forward and reverse strokes and quick pivots will come in handy in this exciting environment. Stern rudder, bracing, edging, balance, and environmental awareness can all be honed here.

The location of the Surf Class may vary, and we may be able to meet at the class site. If possible before your course, please stop by our Expedition Base to say howdy.

Our Expedition Base is located near the center of Loreto, on Nicolas Bravo 2 doors south of the tall concrete auditorium. It is staffed at designated meeting times and during store hours.

Directions

Go to the waterfront, and turn south on the Malecon (the waterfront road/walkway). At the end of the road and walkway, turn inland (right) one block, then turn left. Pass the tall concrete building on the right, and one house. Our name is painted on the outside wall. We will be prepared to meet you at the pre-arranged meeting time, or during store hours.
