Sea Leader Expedition

Seamanship (sea-person-ship) involves nearly constant decision-making, and there is no substitute for experience to develop fluid decisions. Whether you paddle for your own enjoyment or lead groups, the Sea Leader Expedition invites you to consolidate, develop, and reflect on your experience in the context of an actual trip. We pull back the curtain and expose the questions we are asking and the decisions we are making. Kayaking, it’s really about life. Let’s open those conversations.

Skilled paddlers who are simply interested in a challenging journey are welcome on this trip.

If you are interested in developing your leadership, we invite you to take your turn at the helm of the group and reflect on the process, with the safety net of an experienced coach (ACA & British Canoeing leadership trainer Ginni Callahan who has over 25 years of Baja guiding experience).

Sea Leader Expedition is an opportunity for experienced leaders to gain recognition and certification as British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leaders, Endorsed Guides, or ACA Coastal Kayak Trip Leaders. (Prerequisites apply.) Those pursuing certifications, endorsement or assessments do need to let us know their intentions at least 30 days before the trip and provide evidence of their prerequisites. You will also have pre-trip homework.

Weather

Your safety is our top priority, and we comply with the local Port Captain who dictates when we can move about on the water.

Loreto offers a delightful escape from cold or wet northern winters. The peak kayak-camping season falls between October and early May. Temperatures can vary widely between day and night in the desert, and Loreto is no exception. Average highs are 70-80s (mid to high 20sC) and lows in the 50s (teens C).

October and late April are quite warm and settled. December through February have the greatest potential for Baja’s famous Norte winds which can last a few days. November and March are transitional. Summers are hot and humid, which makes them grand for in-water activities but a bit toasty for beach camping.
